Alternative Funerals:

Alternative funerals are becoming more popular in recent years though sometimes difficult to obtain. Often traditional funeral directors and religious authorities are resistant to these changes. But just as in weddings and other public ceremonies, the trend in funeral practices is toward more meaningful and personalized services, which remember and celebrate the uniqueness of each human person.

Memorial Services

Memorial services usually, but not always, take place after the disposition of remains, which in either case is not present for the service, thus the name "memorial" which simply means remembering. These memorial services often take place following cremation and, with the exception of a casket and remains being present, are for the most part identical in content to traditional funeral services.

Secular Services

These funeral services are designed for those families whose backgrounds do not include religious expression but who would like to celebrate the life of someone dear to them. Our funeral home provides a funeral facilitator or will instruct a family, friend, or other professional i.e. Doctor, lawyer in the protocol of self-design funerals. Some of the tools for effecting closure to the deceased are his or her favourite music, a presentation of favourite objects brought forward by gift bearers, poetry or personal messages that the deceased gave prior to his or her death, favourite songs in voice and/or instruments given by friends, family or professional musicians, story telling or photo presentation by friends present. Sometimes liturgical folk dance and play-acting can be incorporated into the celebration.

Spiritual Secular

Often we hear people say "She or he never attended church (synagogue, temple or mosque), but was a spiritual and good person!" In this instance we would offer spiritual version of the above. This can be effected using liberal clergy or a funeral facilitator and often hymns, songs and various scriptural resources, traditional and new-age used.

Non-Traditional Religious

Today many people loosely embrace various non-Judeo-Christian beliefs, which do not involve formal religious expression. A service incorporating all or any parts of the above alternatives along with silent meditation, a guided meditation and guided shared spiritual story telling and musical themes.

All of us at the Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home are pleased to serve and assist in any of these alternative practices of universal funeral service expressions. Let us know your needs.
